Screen res question

My screen resolution defaults to 1400x1050, which on my my monitor is too small to see anything. I want to decrease it to 1280x1024, but when I do that it just shrinks the whole desktop so everything is still just as small! How do I get it to fill the screen at that resolution? I have looked in all the "preferences" and "administration" options I can think of. I assume it's something I need to do in a terminal, but I have no idea what.

I have NVidia video-adapter, and when I want to adjust resolution, I run nvidia-settings from terminal.

I don't have that. Do I need it?

I guess, it depends on your video-adapter. If you've got NVidia try installing Ubuntu drivers for it.
Well, i believe you can get better help via irc - #ubuntu

Talked to people on #ubuntu.
Here's what they said:
Shikaku: ama-deus14: open terminal and do locate xorg.conf edit that file for all your visual graphics stuff
mc44: !fixres | ama
ubotu: ama: The X Window System is the part of your system that's responsible for graphical output. To restart your X, type « sudo /etc/init.d/?dm restart » in a console - To fix screen resolution or other X problems: http://help.ubuntu.com/community/FixVideoResolutionHowto

Hope, that'll help.

I recommend you try askin in #ubuntu irc-channel. I had a problem today, too. They helped me solve it before I finished typing my request.
And when you succeed with that, guess, it'd be useful if you write the solution here.

They said you should watch out as you mess with xorg.conf. I recommend you backup that file before you do anything to it. Yeah, and you only can modify it under root.
Some folks say, this might be the problem of your monitor's physical settings - all those knobs, you know...

I dont understand most of what I'm reading on that how-to page, but I'm working on it.

My monitor is actually a laptop - doesn't have a lot of setting options.

Yes, it's a laptop. A Dell Inspiron 8100. I have the manual, but for some reason it doesn't tell you how to use the few buttons it has. Stupid Dell. I'll keep trying different keys until something happens.

Whoa. Okay, I had tried Fn + F7 like a dozen times and it did nothing and then suddenly it worked. WTF? So, THANKS!
